When you first plug in your keyboard in to your macOS device you might get a pop up prompting you to follow Keyboard Setup Assistant. Before proceeding, make sure to have both halves are connected to the device.

Setting keyboard layout

It will ask you to identify the keyboard by pressing certain keys. For the first prompt press the Z key, for the second prompt press the / key. This will setup the keyboard as ANSI. If you plan on using a different layout, for language specific keys, set the keyboard type to ISO or JIS when prompted. If you chose the incorrect one, you can always redo the setup proces by going to System preferences -> Keyboard and hitting Change Keyboard Type.... You may need to restart your device after making changes.

If for whatever reason you can't get it to recognize the Z or /. You can press any other key on the keyboard. MacOS will then prompt that it can't identify the keyboard and allow you to set ANSI explicitly.
