My keyboard layout is mirrored

Steps to follow when the left half acts as the right, and the other way around.

When to use

You should use this document when you're using and/or experiencing the following.

Products

This page applies to the following products:

  • Any wired split keyboard being sold at splitkb.com.

Situations

Use this page when:

  • When typing, the keys output the characters you'd expect from the opposite side of the keyboard.

Expected outcome

After following the instructions on this page:

  • Your keyboard outputs what you expect it to.

When to avoid

Do not use this page when:

  • When using a wireless controller.
  • When using ZMK firmware.

When your keyboard layout is mirrored, it means that the firmware was unable to determine which side is which. It will then decide that the half you've connected to your host device is the "main" side, which is usually the left side.

Connecting the left side instead may be a quick and easy fix, but of course you should be able to connect either half and still have the keyboard work as expected.

Connecting the keyboard

Be sure to use only a single USB cable to connect your keyboard to your host device. The keyboard half that's connected to your computer is called the main half. The other half of your keyboard, the peripheral half, should itself be connnected to the main half.

If you connect both halves to your computer, both halves will think they're the main half, which can lead to unpredictable behaviour. Only ever connect one half to your host device directly.

Multiple host devices? Use a KVM switch instead. Despite having one USB port to connect to a host device with per half, your keyboard is unable to talk to two host devices at the same time. It is also unable to switch which deviced it talks to. Connecting two host devices at the same time can lead to unpredictable behaviour, and may even cause damage to your keyboard or host device. As such, only ever connect your keyboard to one host at a time.

Setting the handedness

All recent keyboard kits, including all kits in the Halcyon and Aurora Series, determine the handedness for you.

However, there may be cases where you need to set the handedness manually, such as when using a controller not sold at splitkb.com. To do so, you can refer to QMK's documentation on Setting handedness for split keyboards. You can use this documentation for both QMK and Vial, as Vial is based on QMK firmware.
