The keyboard won't send output

Steps to follow when your keyboard does power on, but won't provide output.

When to use

You should use this document when you're using and/or experiencing the following.

Products

This page applies to the following products:

  • Any split keyboard being sold at splitkb.com.

Situations

Use this page when:

  • Your keyboard does turn on, but it won't provide any output to your host device.

Expected outcome

After following the instructions on this page:

  • Your keyboard outputs what you expect it to.

When to avoid

Do not use this page when:

If your keyboard's RGB LEDs and/or display does turn on when you plug it in, but keystrokes won't be output, that means it's likely an issue to do with data transfer from the keyboard to your host device.

Check your USB cable

Your cable needs to support data transfer. Some cables only support charging and don't have the wiring to transmit data, which is what your keyboard needs to talk to your computer.

Cables from splitkb.com are known to work, and there are many reputable brands who sell usable USB C cables. Cables which you receive for free with a device may not always support data transfer.

If you have a cable that is known to work for you, try it with your keyboard to see if it works then. If it does, then your original cable may not support data transfer.

Seating the cable

Ensure the USB cable is seated fully into the USB port on both the computer and the keyboard. Do not use excessive force to plug the cable in, it should be firm but not forceful.

If your keyboard uses a TRS or TRRS cable to connect both halves together, ensure it is seated fully into the TRRS jacks on both the left and right side of the keyboard. Do not use excessive force to plug the cable in, it should be firm but not forceful. You can check visually that both cables are inserted equally deep.

Accepting input

Check whether the application you're typing in accepts keyboard input. If you're unsure, you can use a keyboard testing tool such as the QMK Configurator test page.

Install drivers

Though rare, some controllers require the use of drivers to work. Among these is the Elite C. To set things up, please follow QMK's guidance at Unknown Device for DFU Bootloader.
