I can't flash my keyboard

For your firmware flashing troubles

When to use

You should use this document when you're using and/or experiencing the following.

Products

This page applies to the following products:

  • Any microcontroller being sold at splitkb.com.

Situations

Use this page when:

  • Your controller or keyboard won't enter into its bootloader mode.
  • Your controller or keyboard fails to be flashed when using the appropriate action to do so.

Expected outcome

After following the instructions on this page:

  • You're able to flash a new firmware file to your keyboard.

If you're having trouble flashing your keyboard, please first follow the testing steps for your controller:

Please verify whether you're using the correct file extension for your controller. For example, you cannot flash a .hex file to a keyboard which requires a .uf2 file. You can find sample firmware files using our Firmware Finder. We recommend using these precompiled files to do your testing, to rule out any potential errors during manual compilation.

In rare cases, your keyboard may have electrical shorts, which for example can happen when soldering RGB LEDs in the wrong orientation or when connecting two pads together that shouldn't be connected. In that case, your keyboard may refuse to start entirely. To spot bad joints, please read through our soldering guidance, especially Soldering healthy joints.
