Firmware - Myriad

The Myriad Joystick card does not work at all

When your Myriad Joystick module isn't working, walk through these steps to resolve the issue.

You have a joystick Myriad module. You've plugged it in, and attempted to use it, but it's seemingly not doing anything. Pressing on the joystick may cause a button press on what would be the encoder module's button press instead.

During the manufacturing of the first production batch, the factory may have flashed a small number of Myriad modules with the wrong file.

Myriad modules are smart, and report what they are to the keyboard so that the keyboard can offer the appropriate firmware support. Being flashed with the wrong file leads the module to report themselves as a different module instead. The keyboard, basing their support off of what the module reports, then is unable to provide the appropriate firmware support, leading to the module not working.

Solution

With a different firmware file, you can use your keyboard to overwrite the currently inserted module's memory. That way, it will be able to properly report which module it is, and that will allow your keyboard to properly support the working of the module.

You may lose your settings: When reflashing Vial firmware, you may lose your layout and settings. Consider exporting your layout from the Vial app beforehand. When reflashing your keyboard, make sure to flash the same revision firmware again as you currently have if you want to retain your layout, as the layout files are not compatible between both major as well as minor revisions.

As an example, we'll perform the actions outlined on the Elora keyboard.

Preparation

Download the "Reflash Joystick Module" and "Elora" firmware files from firmware.splitkb.com. The files are listed below the "Vial" section, under "Elora rev1".

If you want to retain your current Vial layout, be sure to download the same revision firmware as you currently use. If you haven't reflashed your keyboard yet, it'll have come with the "factory firmware" by default.

If you want to retain your Vial layout, make a backup of your layout in the Vial app. You can do so through the File menu, and choosing "Save current layout...".

Disconnect your keyboard from your computer, then disconnect both keyboard halves.

Ensure you have the Joystick module plugged into a keyboard half. The firmware file you'll flash to it will overwrite the module's memory only of the side that is plugged into your computer. We've provided alternative files you can use if you flashed the wrong module by accident: if that's the case, just follow these steps again to reflash the module.

Flashing

Plug in the keyboard half, with the joystick module plugged into it, into your computer using a USB C cable.

Quickly double tap the reset button. It's located on the inner side of the keyboard, next to the Myriad module connector. This puts the keyboard in so-called "bootloader mode". A new removable USB drive will appear on your system.

Copy the elora_rev1_flasher_joystick.uf2 file onto the USB drive. The drive will eject itself, and the flashing process will start automatically.

Wait until the underglow feature of your keyboard turns green. This usually takes only a few seconds. If it's green, success! The module is now flashed with the proper joystick file. The keyboard will enter bootloader mode of itself automatically, after which it appears as a removable USB drive once more.

Copy the firmware file onto the USB drive. This flashes your keyboard with normal keyboard firmware, so you can use it as a keyboard.

Lastly, unplug your keyboard from USB, then connect both halves together with a TRRS cable using the top TRRS jacks as usual, and plug in your keyboard again. Almost done!

Restoring your layout

As the last step, if you opted to export your layout file during the preparation, you can now restore your layout. You can do so in the Vial app. Go to the File menu, and choosing "Load saved layout...".

If you can't load a saved layout, you may have flashed a different firmware file to your keyboard than was originally installed. You may find the available firmware files at firmware.splitkb.com.

Exceptions

If the keyboard's underglow turns red, or if it doesn't present as a removable USB drive after flashing the module, then the flashing process may not have succeeded. You can follow the flashing steps once more just to be sure. If the problem persists, please reach out to support@splitkb.com. We'll help you along to make sure you're able to use your module again.
